Assess your local light pollution and find a suitable safe spot from which to make your observations. Some newspapers have a monthly night sky column which will help you to do this. How well can you see the night sky with the naked eye from where you live? Familiarise yourself with the night sky (see below for guides to the night sky) and learn to recognise the brighter planets and the more obvious constellations throughout the year.
